Make Airbnb, Stayz and Expedia pay their dues for contributing to the homelessness crisis in NSW

Short term rental accommodation in NSW has become unsustainable. Byron Bay is home to the most short-term rental accommodation in the state, while also having a 129% increase in its social housing waitlist. People across the world come to NSW to enjoy our friendly cities and towns. As some chase short term profits, residents are being priced out, and these communities are being destroyed.

Of the 35,000 short-term rental accommodation properties in Australia, 15,000 are empty for most of the year. NSW needs solutions to the housing and homelessness crisis. That’s why we’re proposing a levy of 7.5% on short-term rental accommodation, following suit with what the Victorian Government have recently implemented.

With this extra revenue, homelessness organisations will be better able to meet the demand of those experiencing homelessness so they can find a safe place to live, supported by proper wraparound services.

Over 70 organisations have already supported this petition. Will you join with others in ensuring our the people of our regional communities, cities and suburbs have a better chance at safe and secure housing? Holidays are no excuse for homelessness.
