Australia is confronted by an increasing housing affordability crisis resulting in tens of thousands of people being stuck on the waiting-list for social housing for extended periods. This project is motivated by a need to better understand the lives and circumstances of – people registered on social housing waiting lists (‘waitees’) while they are waiting for social housing. We recognise the urgency and complexity of this issue and must leverage all available resources and collective efforts. We commit to working closely with homelessness services, communities, businesses, people with lived experience and governments. Through aligned action we aim to achieve a future where homelessness is rare, brief and nonrecurring.

Homelessness NSW invites feedback on the interim findings and recommendations from our recent study on Temporary Accommodation (TA) in NSW. The report is informed by more than 237 survey responses from statewide specialist homelessness, allied services and TA providers.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released the 2021 Census data on Homelessness. Nationally, 122,494 people were estimated to be experiencing homelessness at the time of the 2021 Census, an increase of 6,067 people (5.2%) since 2016. Keep reading.

The Aftershock report series on housing security by Impact Economics and Policy reveals 54,000 NSW households have entered or experienced worsening housing stress since COVID, with increasing homelessness to cost the NSW economy up to $2.5 billion over six years.
